Ciao! We have been in Italy for about 2 weeks now, just concluding my first official week of student teaching. After our long travel day, arriving in Florence was so exciting. Although we had to trek through the city with our bags for our whole trip, it will serve as a core memory for me. We arrived at our Airbnb greeted with 8 flights of stairs, and the adrenaline of our 24 our travel day to fuel us to get our bags up to our apartment. The views were worth all the hard work! We had a patio with a direct view of the Duomo, I still couldn’t believe I wasn’t in a dream. Getting to know all the girls in the cohort was so special and we bonded immediately with our teamwork of navigating a new city and checking into our Airbnb. Having the time to explore Florence with my cohort eased my nervousness going into school, made me feel so comfortable with my team of student teachers, and gave us all the opportunity to explore a new city! I’m so grateful we were given that time before meeting our host families and traveling to Siena!
My host family has provided a great space for me, and I love dinners with them every night! Before staring my student teaching placement in Siena, I went in with an open mind and a positive outlook. I knew before traveling that the International School of Siena has students in a business studies program online called Pamoja. The teachers greeted me with such kindness and excitement to have me as an expert in the business studies field! My four students in Grade 12 have been so appreciative of my help and I have already facilitated lessons about accounting and cash flow. I am also teaching the DP students economics, in terms of macroeconomic objectives. We are starting a unit on unemployment and inflation, and it was so amazing to hear all the students' perspectives on the issues and how unemployment and inflation affect different aspects of the economy in different countries. I am learning so much everyday about global sustainability. I am also teaching a class called Individuals and Societies to Grade 8 and Grade 11. This class is fascinating because it combines aspects of history, geography, business, economics, and environmental sciences. I love how the International School connects all subjects into dynamic lessons and encourages real world learning every day. With my coaching experience, the teachers are also having me help in PE teaching Grade 4 and Grade 7! This is an amazing opportunity for me to grow as a teacher in all different content areas. I have felt so welcomed by all the teachers and administrators at the International School of Siena and I can’t wait to see what the future of this placement brings!

I am writing this the night before our big travel day! I am filled with mixed emotions but the main two are nerves and excitement. I'm so grateful for this opportunity, however completely out of my comfort zone. Two years ago today I was enrolled in my first semester at Buffalo State. I decided to leave my job in the corporate world, and join the field of education. As a graduate student, I wasn't sure what I was in for. What kind of teaching philosophies will I learn? Am I even qualified to become a teacher? Did I make the right choice with this new path? As I wrapped up my first placement in Business Marketing Education at Williamsville North High School, I finally was able to answer all my questions. I was finally confident I did choose the right path and this career will turn out to become something really special for me. The students and teachers at North were so welcoming and accepting, I can only hope the same for the International School of Siena. I learned so much from my mentor teacher, Mrs. Belsito, and I will take all these new strategies with me to Italy. Leaving home is going to be hard, uncomfortable, and scary, but I believe you have to experience these things in life to become fulfilled. I want to thank my parents, my sister Kamryn, my boyfriend Jonah, all of my friends, and my amazing field hockey team, I wouldn't be here without your support! |
AuthorCiao tutti! I am so excited to get started working with my students and mentor teachers at the International School of Siena! I realized my passion for travel through studying international business and marketing during my undergraduate studies in Edinburgh, Scotland. I can’t wait to eat pasta, drink coffee, observe art, and learn about Italian culture. I feel so grateful I will be able to build relationships with students all over the world! Thank you for supporting me through this ArchivesCategories |
